Sunday Morning Update

Humberto a little weaker
NHC has classified Humberto by satellite classification techniques. As stated by NHC, cloud tops have warmed overnight, indicating weakening. IMO, Humberto may not have been a cat 5, but a cat 4 yesterday. Cloud tops that I have seen with other cat 5 hurricanes seemed to be a bit colder. Anyhow, without direct data from a Hurricane Hunter aircraft - which we did not have - we'll never know for sure.

This morning the eyewall is much smaller. It appears that some dry air was entrained into the circulation overnight, which can be seen on the IR imagery below. The eye is now also clouding over. IMO, this hurricane is probably not quite as high as the official estimate.

Sunday Afternoon Update

Humberto shows improved structure
Despite no change in the wind speed by NHC, IMO satellite imagery shows colder eyewall cloud tops and an expanded eyewall structure again. Winds likely dropped lower that the official estimate by 10-15 mph earlier today, but now may be close again.

The Weather Situation
SUMMARY OF 1100 AM AST...1500 UTC...INFORMATION

LOCATION...24.6N 64.3W

Tropical Weather Forecast:
Humberto is well north of Puerto Rico / Virgin Islands and the only seen effects will be higher than normal surf on the north shores. This high surf will also be felt on the US SE / Mid-Atlantic coasts and Bahamas east coasts. Humberto will remain well east of the Bahamas, but a second tropical cyclone - Imelda - is bringing heavy gusty showers there. Humberto will remain strong for a few days then is forecast to move west of Bermuda into early next week by around Tuesday. After Tuesday it will accelerate rapidly into the northern North Atlantic Ocean.

Monday Evening Update

Humberto will brush to the west of Bermuda
Humberto has been fighting westerly shear been aided by the upper winds from Imelda to the west of the circulation. Most of the deep convection is near the core and to the east in rainbands. Outflow to the east of the circulation remains excellent, helping sustain deep convection east of the low center.

Tropical Weather Forecast:
Humberto will move west of Bermuda tonight into Tuesday. Rain bands and high surf can be expected on Bermuda and the US east coast. It will accelerate rapidly into the northern North Atlantic Ocean later on Wednesday as the system becomes extratropical. After Humberto passes Bermuda on Tuesday, Imelda will follow on Wednesday. Tuesday Afternoon Update

Humberto weakening rapidly
Humberto's center has rapidly lost convection this morning with a slight comeback on the eastern side early this afternoon. IMO, NHC had a wind estimation well over the likely actual winds. It is quite possible that Humberto is not even a hurricane by the latest satellite imagery.
