Puerto Rico Travel Weather

What's the Weather Like When Traveling to Puerto Rico?

Puerto Rico is the easternmost island of the Greater Antilles in the northern Caribbean. The Atlantic Ocean borders it to the north and Caribbean Sea to the south. Mountains cover the central part of Puerto Rico to the eastern coast with some peaks over four thousand feet high. These mountains have a profound effect on precipitation regimes and to a lesser extent temperatures. Puerto Rico is also affected by hurricanes with the greatest threat during the height of hurricane season from mid August into October.

Puerto Rico Rainfall
San Juan is a popular tourist destination. The climate has a wet and dry season, but not as pronounced as some of the other Caribbean islands. The wettest time of year occurs during summer and autumn. Rainfall is in the range of five to six inches per month from May to December. Lesser amounts of two to four inches occur from January to April.

The higher elevations of the mountains have much heavier rainfall. Amounts of around 200 inches can be expected. This is because of the moist trade winds being lifted by the mountains causing daily showers. The mountains have the reverse effect of the south coast, where the driest weather can be found. This is a region of down sloping winds generally causing less frequent showers.

Puerto Rico Temperatures
Temperatures in San Juan are quite uniform all year long. The warmest weather is from summer to early autumn. Daily highs are in the upper 80's with morning lows only in the mid 70's. The coolest weather is in the winter months of January and February. Daytime highs are still warm with readings reaching the mid 80's. Lows only drop to near 70. The mountains are a few degrees cooler, and the south coast a couple of degrees warmer than what you would find at San Juan.

Puerto Rico Travel Weather Summary
Travelers going to Puerto Rico can expect a fairly uniform climate. Temperatures do not change much during the year with the most pleasant readings during the winter. Lesser rainfall amounts coincide with the slightly cooler temperatures during the winter. Travelers are advised to stay updated with latest tropical weather information if traveling during the hurricane season.
